Winter
Death, Life, Transformation

The second wave of feminism, rather than having crashed onto the shore, is still far out to sea, slowly and inexorably gathering momentum. None of us who are alive today will witness more than the first rumbles of the coming social upheaval. Middle-class western women have the privilege of serving the longest revolution, not of directing it. The ideological battles that feminists are engaged in are necessary, but they are preliminary to the emergence of female power, which will not flow decorously out from the universities or from the consumerist women's press. Female power will rush upon us in the persons of women who have nothing to lose, having lost everything already. It could surge up in China where so many women divorced for bearing girl children are living and working together, or in Thailand, where prositution and AIDS are destroying a generation, in Iran or anywhere else where women are on a collision course with Islamic fundamentalism, or anywhere the famished laborer sees luxury foods for the western market grown on the land which used to provide for her and her children. And the women of the rich world had better hope that when female energy ignites they do not find themselves on the wrong side.

22. "Re: "To Aura, an overdue apology""

The Not In Our Name statement stands as a good example of what accountability to a victim can be.

That said, this has been going on since October, 2004! Way too long for it not to indicate serious problems within the organization, and the damage to Aura during this time was immense as was the work she had to do to turn this event around.

One thing that is missing from the NION statement is what was meant by "political support" for NION from Larry Flynt? How much money has Not In Our Name taken from Flynt most recently and in the past? There needs to be a public accounting and all that money should be donated to Aura Bogado. If Hustler didn't give money then NION need to make an organizational donation to Aura to cover her expenses and for her time as restitution expended due to their actions.

Also is Robert Corsini still the NION LA Organizer? Currently on larryflynt.com in an article entitled "Caught In the Crossfire" Corsini states that feminists and Pacifica are being investigated by Hustler magazine and it's hard to tell if he is part of the investigation.

Also Not In Our Name, in their apology wrote:
"Without collective input from any other Not in Our Name activist, he broadcast an email message to the Not in Our Name Los Angeles list, which included Aura Bogado, highlighting LarryFlynt.com’s political support for the RNC protest efforts. This broadcast email was the first time most Not in Our Name activists became aware of any connection with LarryFlynt.com."

In Hustler Robert Corsini wrote:
"When I first broached the idea during a national NION conference call, it was met with silence. After explaining the rationale behind my proposition and extrapolation on Flynt's track record in publishing what nobody else would, I received a reluctant nod to proceed. And I did."

These quotes represent a contradiction that ought to be further explain by NION.

Thank you for your consideration of these concerns, Nikki Craft

23. "Is Amy Goodman paying attention?"

I found it a bit ironic that last Thursday, Amy Goodman had Gloria Steinem in studio, since she was in town protesting the opening ceremony for De Beers. So she took the opportunity to ask Steinem to talk about Andrea Dworkin.

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/23/1358234

AMY GOODMAN: But before we go to break, because we have Gloria Steinem in the studio, I wanted to ask you, Gloria, about the feminist writer and activist, Andrea Dworkin, who died at her home recently in Washington, 58 years old. She was best known for her feminist critique of pornography, which she first outlined in her book, Woman Hating. She was the author of over a dozen books on pornography and violence against women, often argued that pornography was a precursor to rape. She said in ‘86, (quote), “Pornography is used in rape to plan it, to execute it, to choreograph it, to engender the excitement to commit the act.” Just a few weeks ago, I watched you, Gloria Steinem, at the memorial service for Andrea Dworkin in May in New York City. This is an excerpt of what you had to say.

GLORIA STEINEM: It's hard to imagine anyone else who was simultaneously more clear and more misunderstood than Andrea, more fierce and more vulnerable. Those of you who knew her personally knew how vulnerable she was. She always reminded me of the gray panther saying, which was “Speak truth to power, though your voice shakes." And somehow, Andrea managed always to speak, no matter how many fears she had.

AMY GOODMAN: Gloria Steinem, speaking in New York at a memorial service for Andrea Dworkin. If in just a few minutes, for particularly young people who may never have heard of Andrea Dworkin, you could describe her legacy and her significance.

GLORIA STEINEM: Her most important legacy is her writing, so I hope that people go straight from Democracy Now! and look at Woman Hating. Just look up her name and all of her books and go find anything. She is, I always thought, our Old Testament prophet raging in the hills, telling the truth. She was constantly accused, for instance, of censorship, though she never, ever, ever advocated prior restraint. She was only talking about a civil remedy, if it could be demonstrated that pornography had contributed to a crime, yet, you know, she -- the lovers of pornography kept accusing her of censorship. She really is a world mind that is still accessible to us through her work. And that is her greatest, greatest, greatest legacy. She had a capacious mind. You know, when she died she was preparing a book about authors in this country, the male icon kind of authors and looking at the values reflected in those authors and taking on Faulkner and, you know, all of the great names. She was endlessly curious. It just -- it's hard to think of another writer who is so clearly authentic in every word, and at such personal cost.

Compare this quote about Andrea Dworkin's work:

"She was best known for her feminist critique of pornography, which she first outlined in her book, Woman Hating. She was the author of over a dozen books on pornography and violence against women, often argued that pornography was a precursor to rape. She said in ‘86, (quote), 'Pornography is used in rape to plan it, to execute it, to choreograph it, to engender the excitement to commit the act.'"

with this quote describing Denis Rader's account of why he killed 10 people in Kansas:

"Dennis Rader, 60, a former Boy Scout leader and church president who in poems and packages sent to news outlets nicknamed himself B.T.K. - for bind, torture, kill - referred to his victims as 'projects' as he answered questions from a judge in a Wichita courtroom, and said strangling them had been part of a sexual fantasy. ... He offered no motive other than sexual fantasy, and spoke of putting victims 'down,' as a veterinarian might a dog."

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/national/28rader.html

How much do you want to bet that this guy, like Ted Bundy, used pornography in his tortures and murders? How much do you want to bet that, as happened with Ted Bundy, that information will be lied about, hidden, and generally dismissed as not being about pornography but being about the mental illness of particular individuals?

25. "Char's article"

   Warning: possibly triggering quote.

From the article Char posted:

In 1977, he said, he sneaked into 25-year-old Nancy Fox's apartment, snipped her phone lines and waited in the kitchen for her to come home. "I confronted her and told her I had sexual problems and I'd have to tie her up and have sex with her," Mr. Rader recalled. "She was a little upset. We talked for a while and she smoked a cigarette and I went through her purse. She finally said, 'Well, let's get this over with so I can call the police.' "

But Mr. Rader did not rape Ms. Fox - indeed, there was no evidence of sexual assault of any of his victims .... Instead he...masturbated after she was dead.

She was "a little upset"? WTF, that sounds so unreal. And then he killed her. The only thing that comes to my mind is my God if I were in that situation I hope I would find the rage within me to fight the misogynist, kill him if I had to! I'd rather be in jail than dead.

This poor woman, how awful...it sounds like she thought she'd survive if she just complied with him.
